3. Oncology Medical Social Worker
The Oncology Medical Social Worker is responsible for providing speciality oncology social work support to cancer clients of all ages, their families and identified groups.
Reporting administratively to the Territorial Specialist, Cancer Care, the incumbent will receive ongoing clinical supervision and guidance through matrix relationships established within the NTHSSA Clinical Integration team.
In collaboration with the Cancer Nurse Navigator, the incumbent will work to coordinate and navigate the care of persons and families affected by cancer in the NWT across their cancer journey.
This position promotes a holistic and comprehensive approach to planning, organizing, teaching and relationship development that will best meet the needs of the client; acts as a client advocate, facilitating communication between the client, their family, family practitioners, specialists and other health care professionals; engages in direct cancer client care during various inpatient and outpatient units at Stanton Territorial Hospital (STH); respects the client and family through supporting and maintaining the confidentiality of client information; and recognizes the supportive association within the cancer care trajectory to promote emotional self-care.
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by: A baccalaureate Degree in Social Work; master’s preparation preferred; a minimum of five (5) years of clinical counselling experience in a health care setting; a minimum of two years of clinical counselling experience in a cancer care setting preferred.
Yearly registration and continuing competency through the Registrar, Professional Licensing of the GNWT, and Department of Health and Social Services is required.
